Nettie Nakonechny Obituary - 2023 (2024)

In loving memory of Nettie Nakonechny

Nettie (Ukrainec) Nakonechny died tragically on June 15th, 2023 and is survived by her children Peggy (Bill) Zazalak and Pat (Laurie) Nakonechny, daughter-in-law Mickie Mohs (Perry) as well as grandchildren Alyssa (Jody), Kaylee (Emelio), Taleah (Shawn), Kaitlin (Landon), Rae (Neil), Haley (Kyle), Brenna (Justin) and great grandchildren Mila, Barrett, Olivia, Bennett and Louella. Nettie is also survived by brother-in-law David (Shirley) Nakonechny, and sister-in-law Jan Nakonechny, niece Veronica (Wayne) Herman and a large extended family on both sides. She was predeceased by her husband Edward, son Perry, grandsons Bryan and Tyler, along with her four siblings and their spouses Bill (Rose), Nellie (Mike), Lee (Joe), Ann (John), and Ed’s siblings Florence (Paul) Gingera and Barry Nakonechny.

Nettie was born to Peter and Mary Ukrainec and raised on a farm north of Pine River, Manitoba. She completed her early schooling at Pine River School, walking two miles to school each day. She finished her Grade 12 by correspondence and summer school in Winnipeg. She attended Normal School in Winnipeg from 1956-57 before beginning a 28 year teaching career in the Dauphin Ochre/Mountain View School Division and retiring in 1992. During that time she also spent 7 years as a stay-at-home mom. She furthered her studies through Brandon University, completing a Bachelor of General Studies Degree. She loved to teach!!

She married Ed (who she always referred to as the love of her life) in 1958 and enjoyed 51 years of married life. The two of them were inseparable.
Nettie and Ed made family a priority and were busy parents, dedicated to years of following their kids’ activities. They were constant figures in the bleachers or arenas and huge cheerleaders. Once their children were grown, she and Ed travelled to visit them often and stayed very involved with all of their grandchildren. Camping with Baba and Gido was special. Nettie’s extended family (local and distant) were always a part of her life and plans as well. She found joy in family.
Nettie was very proud to be Ukrainian, and she valued Ukrainian traditions. She had great concern for the Ukrainian war refugee families who had moved to the Dauphin area.
After experiencing the tragic loss of her husband, son and two grandsons, Nettie showed incredible strength in continuing to carry on and redefine what her life would be. This is when she became the capable, independent (and highly organized) “Baba” we watched persevere!
A perogy making “machine”, master of pickles and the “Queen of Emojis”… she did not let new technology, breast cancer, or Covid slow her down. She continued to plant a full garden and read extensively!
Nettie was “Baba” to so many, including her step-grandchildren and great step-grandchildren… but literally everyone in her life called her “Baba”!
Having Baba in your life meant birthday cards in the mail without fail, gifts of hand-made crafts and endless conversations. She loved her regular coffee dates and playing cards with friends. She was so looking forward to her upcoming move to St. George’s Place and had big plans for more travel.
Baba was feisty!! But she was so soft and thoughtful at the same time. That combination is what made her the woman we all will remember fondly.

Nettie would have been so upset about the accident on June 15th, as she was fond of so many involved. Our family would like to thank all first responders at the scene of the accident that took care of her and all those who provided support in the days that followed. We are so grateful to all of you and our hearts are with the other families affected.
