Donald Harry Demchuk Obituary - 2023 (2024)

It is with deep sorrow and much love that we announce the passing of our beloved Father, Grandfather, Brother, Uncle, and Friend, on October 1, 2023, at the age of 79.

Left to cherish his memories are his daughters Donna (Amos) Dowler and Darlene (Miguel) Maguet. He will be lovingly remembered by his precious grandchildren Morgan and Damien Maguet and Payton Dowler. He will also be remembered by his siblings Andrew (Lorraine) Demchuk, Edward Demchuk, Martha (Herman) Dobslaw, and by many nieces, nephews, other family members, and many friends.

Don is predeceased by his parents Tony and Lena, his wife Betty, and siblings Jim, Patricia, Gus, and Bill.

Don was born in Dauphin and raised on the family farm in Valley River, Manitoba. The eldest of 8 children, Don was involved in the daily duties of farm life, while attending school, and helping his siblings. Don was very involved in many school sports at which he excelled and enjoyed immensely. When he finished school, Don spent some time working in Alberta before getting hired by C.N. Rail in 1964. He worked several jobs for C.N. before becoming an engineer for Freight and Via Rail. Don made many friends who all enjoyed working with him, because of his incredibly friendly demeaner and willingness to mentor the younger guys. While working full-time for C.N until his retirement in 1996, he continued to farm the land where he was raised. After retirement, Don earned his Real Estate license and continued his involvement in community groups most notably the Knights of Columbus.

Don Married the love of his life Betty (nee Sorokopud) November 2, 1968. Living in Dauphin, they raised their two daughters Donna, and Darlene.

Don thoroughly enjoyed playing sports throughout most of his life. When he was not playing a sport, he was watching one on television or listening to a game on the radio. His love of sport carried on with his children and his grandchildren. He loved watching them participate in curling, hockey, and water polo. He was also an avid outdoorsman, enjoying camping, hunting, and fishing whenever he had the opportunity.

The family would like to express their gratitude to the numerous healthcare workers and friendly staff that cared for him at the Lorray Manor where he resided. He appreciated their consistent support, kindness, and friendship. We would also like to extend our gratitude to the staff at the Dauphin Regional Hospital.

Don will be missed by all, and remembered for his outgoing genuine personality, generosity, and optimism.

Viewing will be offered on Saturday, October 21, 2023 at 9:30 am with Rosary at 10:30 am from St. Viator's Roman Catholic Church.

Funeral Mass will take place October 21 at 11:00 am at St. Viator’s Roman Catholic Church in Dauphin, Manitoba.

The Rosary and Mass will be live streamed for those unable to attend.
