How to Boil Chicken and Shred:

You can buy a rotisserie chicken and shred the chicken for an easy way to make this dinner. However, we have the perfect post on How to Boil Chicken Breasts that is just as easy. Plus it is a great way to save money.

I am using cooked chicken in this recipe to make it a very simple meal. In my family I like to cook chicken in huge batches, freeze it, and save it for simple dinner ideas.

However, you can easily cook your chicken in the crock pot. See Crock Pot Shredded Chicken.

What to Serve with Chicken Alfredo:

I like to keep things simple when I prepare this recipe.

  • Steamed Broccoli – We love to make steamed broccoli with this recipe. Since Chicken Alfredo is a hearty meal, I like to keep the side light.

Variation Ideas:

  • Add in Vegetables – Add in spinach, broccoli, sun dried tomatoes, or mushrooms for additional flavor.
  • Change the Pasta – We love changing the pasta to what we have on hand. Bow tie pasta or rigatoni noodles would work great for this recipe.
  • Change the Cheese – For a different flavor change the cheese to Romano or asiago cheese.
  • Add in Shrimp – Add in some shrimp or replace all the chicken with shrimp.
  • Other Meats – If you like a savory flavor, mix in some bacon or some prosciutto.
  • Fresh Herbs – If you have some fresh herbs it would a great addition to this casserole. We recommend chives, thyme or fresh basil.
  • Ravioli – Instead of using penne pasta, you can use cheese ravioli or tortellini for that extra cheesy flavor.

Tip for Chicken Alfredo Pasta Casserole:

  • Cooked Chicken – This is a great recipe to use leftover chicken or get a rotisserie chicken.
  • Shredded Cheese – We recommend using freshly shredded cheese. The pre-shredded cheese has other ingredients that may cause the cheese not to melt as well.
  • Alfredo Sauce – We love this recipe because you can use jar alfredo sauce. But you can easily make your own.

FAQs

Can you keep chicken Alfredo warm in a crockpot? ›

While your chicken roasts, boil the cavatappi noodles, and make the rich creamy sauce then throw it all together in your crock pot on the warm setting. I kept mine on warm from 2-8pm while at a volleyball tournament.

Does chicken need to be covered in liquid in crockpot? ›

As long as the breast pieces are in a single layer, in contact with the slow cooker, then no, it's not necessary to add any chicken broth or chicken stock. If you're doing multiple layers, you will need to add liquid to cover the meat, but I don't recommend this. The seasonings won't stick as well.

Does cooking chicken in the crockpot longer make it more tender? ›

Chicken breasts have very little connective tissue; that means they can be cooked quickly because the long cooking time needed to soften connective tissue isn't necessary. They also have little fat, which means they can become dry if cooked too long. So that is the science behind it. I hope this helps.

Why is my sauce watery in the slow cooker? ›

For instance, slow cooker meals can turn out to be watery when there is too much liquid added at the beginning of the preparation or if during the cooking process, the water does not evaporate producing a runny consistency.

Is it OK to leave chicken in crockpot on warm overnight? ›

Don't leave it on 'warm' all day

Most appliances will automatically shut off after 20 or so hours on this setting, but you shouldn't leave food in a slow cooker for an extended length of time. The general rule of thumb is that 2-4 hours is the maximum length of time you can leave food in a slow cooker on warm.

How to keep Alfredo warm for a party? ›

Here's how to keep pasta warm for a crowd.
  1. Use a Slow Cooker. Setting it and forgetting it is the most hands-off method. ...
  2. Use the Double Boiler Method. Fill a large pan or pot halfway with water and bring it to a simmer. ...
  3. Use a Chafing Dish. Just like you see at a wedding or a buffet.

Is it better to cook chicken on high or low in the crockpot? ›

Always cook your boneless skinless chicken breasts on LOW for the best results. I do not recommend cooking boneless chicken breast on HIGH, as it will become very dry and tough, even if you check it early. On high, the chicken turns out drier; I consistently have the best results with low.

Do potatoes go on top or bottom of meat in a crockpot? ›

Place firm, slow-cooking root vegetables like potatoes and carrots at the bottom of the crock and pile the meat on top. Set the heat level: A general rule of thumb is that cooking on the low setting (170 degrees F for most models) takes about twice as long as cooking on high (280 degrees F on most models).

Should you rinse chicken before putting in crockpot? ›

Put simply, if you wash raw chicken, you are cross-contaminating your kitchen. Yes, fresh fruit and vegetables should be washed with cold water before preparation, but raw poultry should not. Don't worry: Properly cooking chicken will destroy any pathogens. In fact, it is the only way to destroy those pathogens.

Why is my chicken so rubbery after crockpot? ›

In addition, chicken breast has less fat and can become dry (chewy or rubbery) if cooked for too long. Without moisture, the protein fibers in the chicken become elastic.

How long to leave chicken in crockpot on low? ›

Cover your crock pot and cook chicken breasts on low for 6-7 hours or on high for 3-4 hours. Chicken is done when the internal temp reaches 165 degrees F. Use chicken in your favorite recipes. Perfect for shredding!

Can you put raw chicken in a slow cooker? ›

Yes, you can put raw chicken in a slow cooker! Slow cookers and Crock-Pots are designed to cook raw meats. The direct heat from the pot, lengthy cooking time and steam created from the tightly covered container destroys bacteria, making slow cooking safe. You can put frozen chicken in a slow cooker, too!

Does taking the lid off a slow cooker thicken the sauce? ›

Take the lid off

Place the cooker on a high setting, and open the lid for 30-45 minutes to let excess moisture cook off. The liquid will reduce, leaving you with a thick and delicious gravy or sauce. (Tip: This trick can also be applied for thickening stews, or when you've accidentally added too much liquid.)

Can you keep pasta warm in a slow cooker? ›

Use a Slow Cooker

Greasing the insert will keep the pasta from sticking to the bottom and burning, but it won't keep the noodles from sticking to each other. So, add sauce, butter or olive oil to the pasta and toss or stir to coat it evenly. Then, set the slow cooker to warm and let it be until dinnertime.

Can you use a crockpot to keep cooked food warm? ›

Cooked food should be reheated on the stove, in a microwave, or in a conventional oven until it reaches 165 °F. Then the hot food can be placed in a preheated slow cooker to keep it hot for serving—at least 140 °F as measured with a food thermometer.

How to make pasta ahead of time for a party? ›

You can prepare pasta up to 24 hours in advance. To do so, follow these instructions: Cook it for half the time recommended in the package instructions. Then, drain the pasta and spread it out on a cooking sheet and allow it to cool.
